Why are we reopening?

We want to continue to support our local community and provide a place where you can borrow toys, safety equipment and books, helping your child’s development and well-being.

When are we reopening?

We will be trialling reopening for the collection of pre-booked toys from Thursday 9 July. We will be open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am – 12pm, during term time. We are hoping to open during the summer holidays as well. This will be confirmed following our two-week trial and depends on staff and volunteer availability. If you would be interested in volunteering within the Toy Library, please let us know.

How will things work?

Our stay and play sessions will remain closed for the foreseeable future. We will be trialling offering a collection service of pre-booked toys to our members.

How do I borrow items?

We will provide an online catalogue of our most popular toys. These can be pre-booked by emailing info@charltontoylibrary.org.uk. You will need to include the following information:

  • Your child’s name or membership number
  • The toys you would like to borrow (up to 5 toys and 5 books).
  • If you have any specific requests, please ask, we have many items available and haven’t listed everything. We will be working on building our catalogue as we go.
  • If you’re happy to receive a selection chosen by us let us know the ages and any particular interest.

You will receive an email confirming if items are available and when these will be ready for collection.

  • We will be operating a one in one out process so you may need to queue.
  • Markers will be on the floor to help keep 2m distance when queuing.
  • When it is your turn to collect, please come into the main entrance where you will be asked to for your name.
  • Hand sanitiser will be provided for everyone to use on entering the building.
  • Your toys will be collected and placed on a table/trolley. Our staff member will then step back, allowing you to collect your items.
  • Please bring your own bags to take your items away in.
  • Unfortunately, the toilet will remain closed for public for the time being.

Collections can only be made on Thursday and Saturdays, between 10am – 12pm. We may increase this depending on the availability of staff and volunteers.

How are you keeping us safe?

We have completed a risk assessment (available here) and are putting in measures to protect our staff, volunteers and members. These include:

  • Offering a collection only service of pre-booked toys.
  • All returned toys will be stored for 72 hours and then sanitised before returning to stock.
  • Limiting the number of people who can enter the Toy Library and maintaining good social distancing.

Membership fees

We appreciate this is a difficult time for many of our members and will be adding an additional 4 months onto everyone’s membership. We are also wavering our borrowing fees, enabling you to loan up to 5 toys and 5 books, for a 2-week period, included in your membership fees.
We may need to apply fees for larger items or safety equipment. Please contact us and we will confirm based on the item/loan period.
We have made this decision to ensure we are supporting our community through this difficult time. If you are able to make a donation towards your membership or to support our running costs, you can do so here.

I have toys from before you closed, what should I do?
If you are able to return these please do. We will have a returns box inside the entrance of the Toy Library. We will not be charging any overdue fees and there is no rush to return items that you may still have.

What have we been doing whilst closed?

Although our main premises have been closed, we have still been continuing our outreach work. Thanks to our incredible supporters and the following funders: City Bridge Trust, Greenwich Charitable Trust, Small Business Grant from the government, we have been able to provide shopping vouchers and toys for vulnerable families and continue to do so.
